blog block

I have blog block. It’s kind of like writer’s block. The Sunday deadline for this post looms up and I’m wondering what to write about. I started with that nineteen year old Harvard student who got a half million dollar book deal and is accused of plagiarism, but after spending so much energy a few months ago being mad at James Frey, I just couldn’t get into it.

Then I checked our stats (a very cool new thing Brooke has added to this site) and I saw that along with our readers in the US, 30 people from the UK have visited us, 29 from Canada, 8 from Costa Rica, 7 from Italy, 2 from South Africa, 4 from Malaysia, plus others from Hong Kong, Australia, Turkey, France, Thailand, Australia etc. This is so amazing! But it also solidifies my blog block. Now I want to write something significant. Something that you over there in India or China or Finland or Romania, or down in New Zealand will find useful to your own writing. But what?

To Do: If you’re feeling blocked, write about your block in all its stubborn, morose, and miserable details. You have permission to whine, (or to vent as we say in California.) Then, when you get all that out of your system, write: What I really want to write about is….and go for five minutes.
Some writers say that there’s no such thing as writer’s block, but personally I think they’re being a tiny bit smug. Sure, your block might disappear when you have a deadline for your writing – but in order to get a deadline, you need to have written something that can get a contract that has a deadline.
