What Art Offers

If you watched the Tony awards last night you saw in action what Mary McNamara wrote in this morning’s L.A.Times: “From tragedy can come art and from art can come wisdom.”

Frank Langella in his acceptance speech for lead actor in a play said,  “When something bad happens we have three choices: We let it define us, we let it destroy us or we let it strengthen us.”

And the incandescent Lin-Manuel Miranda in his acceptance speech for best original score read a sonnet written to his wife: Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love cannot be killed or swept aside…

Last night was all about what theater, what art, offers us – not only entertainment, but love, connection, solidarity, and hope.
