FIGMENT DAILY THEMES

As the award-winning author of 14 books and a distinguished writing instructor at the acclaimed Writer's Program at UCLA Extension, Barbara Abercrombieknows a thing or two about finding–and sustaining–inspiration. In fact, she wrote the book on it. Her most recent work, A Year of Writing Dangerously, is a collection of quotes, lessons, anecdotes, and prompts designed to keep writers energized. In her next book Kicking in the Wall (to be published by New World Library in June 2013), Barbara continues that search for inspiration, offering writing prompts based on quotes from other writers.

This week, we're thrilled that she's sharing a few of these prompts with us, along with this tidbit from her writing classes: "In class I always introduce prompts with a quote and give a time limit of five minutes," she says. "Writers get out of their own way when there's no time to think or revise. It's like a mini-deadline."

"But what can you say about the first woman in your life? She was Mum. She sorted me out. She fed me. She was forever slicking my hair and straightening my clothes in public. Humiliation. But it's Mum. I didn't realize until later that she was also my mate. She could make me laugh. There was music all the time and I do miss her so." – Keith Richards

Write about your mother, your mum, your mom, your mama, your mother figure. What can you say about her? Write a list of things she did that humiliated/annoyed you and things she did that brought you joy.

Write something you realized about your mother or a mother figure when you grew up. Something you didn't understand as a child.
