Come For Dinner and Tell Me More: Reading Jim Harrison

 English major

I’m now reading The English Major by Jim Harrison and I think it’s the best of all his books. You want to call up his main character and say, Hey, Cliff, come on over for dinner and let’s talk – I want to hear more of your thoughts on farming and politics and sex and love and literature.  Both my husband and my brother had read it before I did, and they both kept telling me they didn’t want it to end, they were savoring it in small bites. I know exactly what they meant; I’m allowing myself just one chapter a day. (While also reading other books –  Nora Gallagher’s memoir Things Seen and Unseen, and a novel, Behind the Scenes in the Museum by the amazing Kate Atkinson)

Last week I read Love by Toni Morrison. It’s a gorgeous book. Weird and funny and heart breaking and mysterious. Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t really understand what was going on until the second part of the book.  But my confusion was okay cause the writing was so breathtaking – like a prose poem.  I read the first eight pages about three times, gave up on understanding it, and then read it again when I finished the book and finally got it. On the other hand the very first paragraph of her book Jazz can make you cry for that parrot.
