Thinking About Memoir

Thinking about  3 dog life Safekeeping

If you want to write memoir and don’t have a copy of Abigail Thomas’s Thinking About Memoir, order a copy immediately. It’s small book (108 pages) packed with advice, wit, and writing exercises.

My UCLA Extension spring course started last week and here’s an exercise we did based on the opening line of Thomas’s memoir, A Three Dog Life.  “This is the one thing that stays the same: my husband got hurt.”

What is the one thing that stays the same in your life?

(Order both her memoirs while you’re at it. The other one is Safekeeping and it’s a book I read over and over. Some chapters are only a few lines or a paragraph long. She bounces from writing it in first person to third. From present tense to past. A very freeing book.)
