A Driverless FedEx Truck & Other Tales

So let me tell you what’s been going on in my life. November was not wonderful. First of all there was the election that still makes me want to bang my head on my desk. Why, how? And I can’t move to Mexico – my original plan – because I’ve got these grandchildren I adore in California and unless I kidnap them, I’m stuck in this country that frankly I don’t feel is mine anymore. (I’m sorry, but I am just not able to move on at this point – )

Then I got hit by a driverless FedEx truck as I waited for the light on Sunset Boulevard on my way to class. And someone on the street who offered to be my eye witness to the accident started yelling about Mexicans (the poor driver of the truck without the brake on had finally shown up and turned out to be hispanic) – So then I got into a fight with my racist eye witness. Talk about all hell breaking loose.

I called Nelson’s vet, our darling Dr. Bob, who is on my speed dial and who happened to in the class I was headed to teach, so I asked if he could pick me up on the way because my car was now undrivable. And he did.

Things started to look up once into December. The Lit Salon had its monthly meeting at my house and there were some amazing readings, and people brought wonderful food and wine and it was cozy and fun. My ancient Honda CRV was returned, after three weeks of rental cars, with a new paint job looking much better than it has in years.

And now it’s the holiday season. And while the foxes are about to start guarding the hen houses in Washington, maybe it’s possible to let go for a while, for a few weeks anyway, and focus on love – for our families, our friends, our work. We’re so very lucky as writers. We get to put everything – the rage, the fear, things going off course and also the love – on paper. Or on our blog.

Happy Holidays everybody. May you have a year of kick ass writing.
