A Gift From the Sea

God willing we’ll be able to exhale tomorrow.

Meanwhile I’m rereading A Gift From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh and feeling calmer. This book is amazing – first published in 1955 and still necessary reading. She writes about searching for a purity of intention, a singleness of eye, a central core to her life, and how to remain whole and balanced in the midst of distractions. How we’re in danger of giving ourselves away in small pieces and the necessity of purposeful giving and solitude – (and this is so true for people who want to be creative).

She writes of all the distractions in life – and this was 1955 so she’s talking about the radio and tv and the telephone. Today we’re just one click away from the whole world, a thousand friends, Face Book, Twitter, online newspapers, blogs, et al. We never need to be alone.

“The solution for me, surely is neither in total renunciation of the world, nor in total acceptance of it,” she writes. “I must find a balance somewhere, or an alternating rhythm between these two extremes; a swinging of the pendulum between solitude and communion, between retreat and return.”

Her voice is so true and deep;she’s a wonderful companion during these turbulent times.
