Recently there was a snarky article in the New York Times Book Review suggesting that too many people are writing and publishing memoirs, and who wants to read another book about owning a crazy dog, losing weight, depression, cancer, trying to adopt, etc.
My advice is to ignore this kind of stuff. If you went through a difficult experience and came out on the other side and can write about it in clear, specific prose, maybe with a little humor too, and we can take that journey with you and learn something – you’ve got to write your book, or your essay.
This kind of snark is an attempt at humor and sounding cool. Don’t let it stick a knife in your back. Keep writing.
