The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. – Socrates
And this is the starting point for each book, each poem, each essay. You don’t come to this work with your story all worked out neatly in your head, ready to be placed on the page complete and perfect.
I tell myself this over and over as I contemplate starting the next book.
Meanwhile I teach what I need to learn. If you’re in or near L.A. come to a writing workshop taught by Anne Perry, Victoria Zackheim and me on [Next one is on October 10th]. It’s an all day immersion in whatever genre you’re interested in. Anne will teach fiction, Victoria the personal essay, and I’ll deal with getting started while knowing nothing and inspiration for dangerous writing. (Anne has over 80 of her best selling mystery novels still in print and has won the Edgar award. Victoria teaches the personal essay online through UCLA Extension and is editor of six acclaimed anthologies.)
