The hardest post of all to write. R. died on February 10th, 2015.

Many of you already knew this. I wrote his obituary which was in the L.A. Times on 2/19 and 2/21, and in the N.Y.T. the following Sunday. The best lines came from our friend Tom who wrote to me that R. was always the last to speak but had the most to say with the fewest of words. And also from R. himself. Online I found an interview he’d given to the University of Chicago’s Business School magazine. Here’s what R. said:

“When you’re in a new venture, there are no rules. There is no path. You cannot look at where you’ve been to figure out where you want to go. You cannot look at someone else who’s doing it already. You have to invent as you go along.”
