Role Models

superwoman_by_kryptoniano-d5mbv8jI believe in role models, friends who inspire you to jump into whatever your heart is pulling you toward, surrounding yourself with people who use all their energy for what they love and believe in and want to create. I know lots of truly wonderful guys – my husband, my brother, my sons-in-law, other writers, colleagues etc. – but right now I’m thinking of some inspiring women in L.A. who write and/or run programs that help writers.

A couple of events have been held at my house this month, one for Red Hen Press and A Room of Her Own foundation and one for WriteGirl so I’m thinking of Kate Gale who is managing editor of Red Hen Press, poet, teacher, blogger, traveler and general cheerleader of all things literary and Darlene Chandler Bassett who created AROHO with Mary Johnson (author of the amazing memoir An Unquenchable Thirst), and Keren Taylor who came up with the idea of WriteGirl, a nonprofit program that has helped thousands of teenage girls through mentoring by women writers and who runs it with such passion and focus. And I’m thinking of  Linda Venis who runs not only the Writers’ Program at UCLA Extension but all of Arts in Extension and who inspired me yesterday at lunch with all her new ideas and non-stop enthusiasm.

Cheers and thanks to them and to all the girlfriends I haven’t mentioned who make my life easier and happier and saner and who inspire me in dozens of ways.
