A Writing Retreat and Remodel Chaos

Both are taking place in Lake Arrowhead, California. The writing retreat will be held the weekend of October 19-21 at the UCLA Conference Center right on the lake. It'll be a weekend to escape chaos and to focus on your writing in a beautiful setting with workshop sessions and delicious meals. More details to come. Sign-ups will start next month so stay tuned.

Meanwhile my cabin, circa 1936, is a work in progress. The above picture is an unexpected and mysterious hole that appeared under a trap door in the kitchen. (I try to think of it as a writing prompt: A character discovers a hole in his or her kitchen floor that goes nowhere and that has been hidden under layers of old floors and a trap door for seventy-six years.)

I had a small panic attack at Home Depot yesterday morning as I checked out kitchen sinks, toilets etc. and I'm now collecting calming advice from friends and family. One daughter said that in the long run there are no mistakes (as I recounted a list of bad decisions I've made so far.) And my agent advised me to embrace the chaos. (Though she acknowledged it was probably easier for her to say this than for me to actually do it.)
